Amerie Biography

Born on January 12, 1980, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Amerie Mi Marie Rogers and her younger sister, Angela, grew up speaking Korean, as their mother was South Korean and their father was African-American.

Because her dad was in the United States Military, Amerie and her family moved from Alaska and Texas to Germany and South Korea, before finally settling down in Virginia when Amerie became a teenager.

Amerie releases All I Have

As early as the third grade in primary school, Amerie entered her first talent show and kept it up well into high school. After graduation, Amerie headed to Georgetown University and studied Fine Arts and English, all the while trying to find out all she could about the music industry.

Upon receiving her degree in 2000, Amerie met up with producer/songwriter Rich Harrison and manged to secure a record deal with Columbia Records. And while she was working on her debut album, Amerie lent her voice to Nas’ single “Rule.”

In 2002, All I Have was released and her single “Why Don’t We Fall in Love” became a huge hit on urban radio throughout the United States and garnered Amerie a Soul Train Award for Best New Soul/R&B/Rap Artist.

Amerie in First Daughter

In 2003, Amerie sang on LL Cool J’s single “Paradise,” DJ Kay Slay’s “Too Much For Me,” and even remade the Diana Ross hit “I’m Coming Out” for the Jennifer Lopez movie, Maid In Manhattan.

Amerie began hosting a television show on the BET network called The Center in 2004, but broke her contract when she was offered a supporting role in the big screen film, First Daughter, starring Katie Holmes and Lela Rochon.

Amerie – Because I Love It

And after going back into the studio to work on her sophomore album, Amerie emerged with Touch. The first single, “1 Thing,” was leaked onto the Internet by Amerie herself, and became her biggest-selling single ever. The song, which was also used as part of the soundtrack for the Will Smith movie Hitch, garnered Amerie the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Entertainer Of The Year.

Amerie’s third album, Because I Love It, released in late 2007, and failed to meet expectations, with the first single “Take Control” failing to chart on Billboard’s Hot 100.

While the pressure is on for Amerie to work wonders with her music, there’s no doubt that her beauty, as well as collaborations with artists like Chingy, will keep her abreast of the music industry.
