Chris Brown Biography

Christopher Brown, born on May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia, became musically inclined thanks to his parents, who were avid music lovers and constantly had the likes of Sam Cooke, Donnie Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, and the Jackson 5 playing on the stereo.

As with most black young boys growing up, Chris was drawn to rap music, and by age 11, he began to appreciate his own singing talents. At 13, his mother got Chris a manager, Tina Brown, and the two worked together to try to get Chris a record deal.

Lucky for Chris, most of the record labels they met with wanted to sign Chris to an album deal, and he and his manager finally decided to sign with Jive Records in 2005. At 16, and standing at 6’1”, Chris was ready for fame.

His self-titled debut album, produced by Scott Storch, was released on November 29, 2005, and became an instant hit, thanks to his infectious dance hit “Run It!”, which climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. Hot 100 and the Australian singles chart, while debuting at No. 2 in the United Kingdom. The remix, featuring Juelz Santana, had the single playing all over the radio and in the clubs.
